Description

1:1 English Language Arts tutoring sessions designed with the student's needs, learning styles, and goals in mind.1:1 English Language Arts tutoring is a wonderful option for students who need extra help, skill building, and/or help to manage their time. It is also great for students who want to be challenged. I work with students who love reading and writing and those who hate it. Regardless of your student’s interest or skill level, my English Language Arts tutoring sessions will help them grow as readers and writers.

Each session is designed with the student in mind. Working with parents and the student, I ensure each lesson is geared toward the student’s needs and goals.

What Does an English Language Arts Tutoring Session Look Like?

Together students and I can work on-

  • reading and reading comprehension

  • writing (essays, creative writing, analysis, research)

  • the writing process

  • spelling, grammar, and punctuation

  • ELA homework

  • test prep

  • reading for enjoyment

  • writing without fear

  • building skills

  • building confidence

  • study skills & time management

  • organization

  • growth mindset

Learn Styles and Individuality

Along with the topics and skills I teach, each class is structured according to how the student learns best. We all learn differently and need different approaches. In our session, I may-

  • read out loud to them

  • read with them (taking turns)

  • have them read out loud

  • assign reading and writing outside of class and use our class time for review and discussion

  • write with students

  • scribe for students

  • have students write outside of class and use class time for reviewing and editing

  • assign and assess projects

Our sessions can be designed to focus on both reading and writing. They can also shift and change over time. Whatever your child needs at the moment is what we’ll focus on.

Interest and Motivation

To help students stay motivated and interested, I often use games and interactive slides during the lesson. For younger students, I also use songs, props, and movement.

Materials

I use a variety of genres to help students learn, including novels, short stories, poems, essays, articles, and test prep guides. I also use Google Docs, Actively Learn, Quizizz, Nearpod, and educational websites. There is no extra charge for these sites, but students will often have to create a free account.

Teaching Style

My teaching style is student-centered, meaning it’s important that students have choices and feel safe expressing their ideas and frustrations. I want our sessions to be helpful and enjoyable. I work hard to build connections, so students feel supported and are willing to work hard and take on challenges.

Students and I will be interacting for the entire session. They are always welcome to email or text me in between our sessions.

I started teaching in 2003. You can read about my teaching journey, or feel free to reach out with questions.

My Goal

My main goal is always to help your child learn and feel confident in the skills they are learning and/or having a hard time mastering. I will check in with students each class to make sure we are staying on track with what they need. I also check in with parents often to let them know what I am seeing, we’re working on, and find out if there are other things teachers/parents are noticing. It’s important we are all on the same page. Parents are always welcome and encouraged to contact me or talk to me during their child’s session.

Homework

I offer ways for your students to practice the skills they are working on, but homework is optional. Some parents like for me to assign work outside of our sessions. I am always happy to set up reading schedules, and assign reading and writing homework, but I leave this up to the parents and students.

Assessment

While I do not give grades, I will often provide feedback regarding where I’m seeing improvement and what I think students should continue to practice.

Pricing, Refunds, & Rescheduling

While my prices may increase, once you become a weekly or bi-weekly client, I will lock you in at the price you started. Students must work with me at least 8 months of the same year to keep their price. If you want to take the summer, holidays, or an extended time off, as long as it is not more than 4 months in a row, your rate will not increase.

I will refund you in full up to 72 hours in advance. Less than 72 hours, I offer a 50% refund or the option of rescheduling. I do not offer refunds for no-shows.  If your child is sick or you have a family emergency, please contact me, and we will work something out.

When you sign up for a class with me, you agree to my pricing policy.
