When I was in school, learning about history meant reading from a huge textbook with tiny writing and, if we were lucky, watching old black and white movies. We memorized dates and the names of dead people. I don’t remember much because it was a huge snore. When we started homeschooling, I was determined to give my kids a different experience. Now in our eighth year of homeschooling, a literature approach to history is by far the best way we’ve found to learn. Literature brings the facts and figures to life, and connections are made. With connections brings relevancy, something I was definitely missing as a student. Best of all, history, it turns out, is NOT boring. In fact, thanks to great literature and hands-on learning, it’s one of my children’s favorite subjects. This year, my sixth grader and I are diving into Beautiful Feet Book’s literature approach to ancient history. We can’t wait! You should join us!

Beautiful Feet Books- Ancient History

Beautiful Feet Books “ignite wonder and connect with your kids” by teaching history through story.

A Literature Approach:

  • Uses great books to teach history
  • Helps kids see the big picture and how history created the lives we live today
  • Creates meaningful discussion topics for you and your children
  • Makes history come alive

Beautiful Feet Book’s literature approach to history includes everything you’ll need for a full year of study. Finding great books and putting together a unit study is possible, but it takes a lot of work. When we first started homeschooling, I’d spend days researching and ordering books and materials. I’ve found curriculums that offer a literature approach are more affordable and take WAY less of my time.

The curriculum includes:

  • 97 lessons (3 per week)
  • 13 books
  • Timeline
  • Teachers Guide
  • Hands-on activities
  • Vocabulary lists
  • Comprehension questions
  • Research topics
  • Website links

I love the simple layout of the teaching guide and my daughter is so excited by her new stack of books!

We are both excited to dive into the timeline. Beautiful Feet Books provided timeline paper and detailed images so my daughter can build a timeline as she learns. I imagine this will be something she not only uses throughout the year but keeps as a cherished artifact from her learning as well.

We can’t wait to dive into our new ancient history curriculum. Filled with great stories and a super simple teaching guide, hands-on activities, and a beautiful timeline, I will forever be grateful for a literature approach to history. Just say no to repeating what doesn’t work! Learning history can be fun, interesting, and meaningful. In fact, being fun and interesting is what makes history meaningful to our young learners.

A literature approach to history brings facts and figures alive. When history is fun and interesting it creates meaning for young learners.
