I like to make decisions. My husband would laugh and say that’s an understatement. Perhaps it’s why I’m a teacher and a homeschooler. Autonomy is important to me. Tell me what to do, and you’re probably going to get push back. It can be a detriment (I’m working on it), but if you’re a homeschooler, you probably like to make decisions too. If nothing else, you are not opposed to them because we homeschoolers have to make many decisions. How we structure our day, what our children learn, how they learn, what materials they use- we decide.
While I love that my daughter and I can choose what our days look like, I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t at times overwhelming. I’ve had to learn to delegate. I can’t do it all. One of the things I let go of was what we do in science. For years now, I’ve left the decision-making up to BookShark. The only choice we have to make is which curriculum we’re going to use. After that, I get to sit back and enjoy learning alongside my homeschooler. Hands-down, our favorite homeschool science curriculum is BookShark. Here’s why!
BookShark’s Science Curriculum is…
Literature-Based
I’m probably just as excited about the books BookShark’s science curriculum uses as my daughter. The books are beautiful, fun to read, and filled with information. Check out our video to see the books she’ll be reading this year.
Hands-On
Science is one of those subjects that can be pretty abstract. Our kids need to experiment, get messy, actually see and experience what is happening to understand the material fully. I love BookShark’s science curriculums because the science experiments are valued. They are not extras but very much a part of each week’s learning.
Includes Everything You Need
This year my daughter is doing Science E. She’s learning all about energy. Right now, we’re looking at the physical characteristics of living things and how our senses play a part in survival. Each week, she reads, writes, and completes hands-on activities from her science experiment book. The lessons are short and interesting. There are questions that help her clarify her understanding and think critically about what she’s learning.
Included in each curriculum are the books and supplies your child will need for the year. My daughter LOVES her yearly box of science materials. I love that other than water and a few basic household supplies, we can dive right into the experiments.
BookShark’s science curriculum is also secular, offers a 4-day schedule, and is standards-based. Perfect for all ages, we have loved every unit.
New for 2021- BookShark has a virtual option that includes assessment, grading, and accountability. If your student is looking for an online, more independent experience, a great way to understand BookShark Virtual is to try it yourself. The first three weeks of every Virtual course are available for free, just like the Instructor’s Guide samples always have been (here).
While I enjoy the challenge a complicated decision can offer, it’s nice when they are easy! I trust BookShark’s science curriculum will help my homeschooler learn and love to learn year after year. Give BookShark science a try!
