What does homeschooling look like- an 8-year-old's perspectiveI’m Sophia. I’m eight. I’ve never been to school because it doesn’t sound fun. My brother is going to school this year and I like that. I didn’t think I would.

It’s fun being the only one at home because I can learn whatever I want, and I got to take over his dog walking job!

What does homeschooling look like- an 8-year-old's perspectiveI homeschool because I like having free time, I like choosing my classes, I like learning with my mom and dad, and I like eating when I’m hungry, which is ALL the time!

What does homeschooling look like- an 8-year-old's perspectiveI also like math, reading, writing, and drawing. I mostly learn these things with my mom. My math program is Beast Academy. It teaches me all sorts of different things, like Geometry. I think it’s fun because it has challenging problems. They’re not easy problems like 5 + 5.

Read to ChildrenI’m learning to read chapter books and novels. My favorites are Ella’s Diary, Fairy Ponies, Green Ember, Poppy, and Wings of Fire. My mom and I are also reading the Magic Tree House books in order. We read together a lot. I like reading before bed.

Wings of Fire is my favorite book series. I created a club with my friends. In the club, we make things, like clay dragons, and act out our favorite scenes.

Creating a Space to Learn and Play- Simple Ideas and InspirationEvery Monday, me and my friends get together and learn new things about being a writer. My mom facilitates the class and she sets up writing stations. I like writing letters and making comics, but I don’t like fastwriting. It is horrible!

What does homeschooling look like- an 8-year-old's perspectiveI free draw whenever I want, which is a lot. I have 44 journals and take one with me wherever I go. Sometimes me and my mom do art classes called Masterpiece Society. There are tons of fun projects. I’ve learned so many things. I can’t name them all, but here is one thing. I learned how to transfer an image to a different piece of paper. My favorite project was painting a cat.

I also take horseback riding lessons,

go to a Waldorf class,

In these classes, I get to learn fun things like how to use outdoor tools, how to track animals, read and write, and ride a horse. We play games and put on plays and I get to see my friends. When I get home, I’m always excited to see my pets.

What does homeschooling look like- an 8-year-old's perspectiveI also do chores. Mom says they help me learn, but I don’t really think they do. I help my parents when they ask for help, I take care of my pets. I feed our dog and play with the cat. I also feed the turtles and clean my room.

What does homeschooling look like- an 8-year-old's perspectiveAnd, I walk a neighbor’s dog twice a week. I am saving the money I make for a new hat. My mom bought me one this summer and I lost it. (If anyone has seen a dark pink hat with a dog wearing headphones that says Turn Up the Volume, please let me know.)

Some other things I love about homeschooling-

I get to spend a lot of time with my family. We play a lot of games together. What does homeschooling look like- an 8-year-old's perspective

I spend a lot of time with my friends. We like playing tag and hide n seek. We meet at the park once a week and go on field trips together. This week we’re going to a science museum to learn about slime chemistry, we’re going to see the play The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and next week we’re going to the zoo.

I also like being able to play outside a lot. I like making forts, climbing trees, playing in creeks, and getting muddy!

Homeschooling doesn’t just happen during the school day. I learn all day long and on weekends.

This year I’m interested in architecture, learning cursive, learning about animals, and so much more.

The pros of homeschooling are spending time with my friends and family and choosing how my day goes. I can eat whenever I want (as long as it’s not too close to dinnertime) and play outside whenever I want. I also love being home with my pets.

The cons of homeschooling- I don’t really feel like I have any. I’m hoping to homeschool until I’m in eighth grade.

That’s all. I’m ready for food…

  1. This was well thought out Sophia. It’s interesting to look at homeschooling from your point of view. I was also struck by how hungry you are, and that makes me wonder how hungry my seven year old might be most of the time! 🙂
