A few nights ago the Iowa Caucus was on tv. My ten year old came in, sat down, asked what a caucus was and then seconds later answered her own question. The 2020 U.S. elections are in full swing and BookShark’s U.S. Elections Lap Book couldn’t have come into our lives at a better time!
I don’t know about you but I didn’t start really learning about the U.S. government until highschool. I don’t remember much about the class other than I wasn’t interested. The textbook we read had teeny tiny text only ants could read, and it was dense, so very dense, which to a 17-year-old translates to B.O.R.I.N.G!!
Much like the majority of my traditional schooling, I knew when it came time to study government with my kid we’d find a different way.
A few months ago we were offered an opportunity to give BookShark’s U.S. Elections Lap Book a try.
I am so glad we said yes!
New to Lap books and BookShark’s resources, I trusted we’d be getting something educational, but I’ll be honest, I wasn’t sure how engaging it would be.
It was so engaging!
BookShark’s U.S. Elections Lap Book took a complex (in my opinion rather dry) topic and made it interesting and relative.
The daily lessons not only break up big ideas into smaller, easy to digest activities, they get kids reading, writing, and creating.
My daughter was more than happy to work on her lap book each day, loved the movable parts, the organization and beauty of the book, and that she got to craft while she was learning.
She learned a lot (we both did!) and now she has a handmade resource that can continue to guide her through this year’s election and the ones to come.
We’re currently working our way through BookShark’s Level D Science curriculum. More to come, but I can’t say enough good things about this one either!
Interested in giving BookShark a try for free. They have an awesome free printable unit on the U.S. Constitution.
What a cool lap book!
Thanks! All Bookshark. It was such a fun project.
About how long did it take you to work through the whole lap book? I’m considering buying but not sure how it will fit into our schedule.
We took our time and it took a couple months.
