The older my daughter gets the more I appreciate a little help with homeschooling subjects like science. By help, I mean the collection of materials. There are so many resources to choose from. It can be daunting and finding high-quality books and materials is SO time-consuming. I know what we want: literature-based, secular, hands-on, fun. I know my daughter wants books and activities that make her want to read and learn. What I didn’t know was everything we were looking for already existed and best of all could be packaged and shipped to us. If you’re looking for a hands-on science curriculum that includes everything you and your child will need, you have to give BookShark a try!
5 Reasons to Choose BookShark’s Science Curriculum
Hands-on Science
BookShark’s hands-on science curriculum encourages learners to go beyond reading the text. They become a scientist. We learn by doing and by being engaged, active in the material. Hands-on means our learners get outside, get messy, grow things, take things apart, draw, write, watch, and listen.
BookShark’s unit on the life cycle of the frog couldn’t have come at a better time. Our vernal pond was filled with frog eggs. My daughter and I spent time watching the frogs mate, she collected a few tadpoles and observed their metamorphosis. A highlight of the spring!
When she learned about animal cells, BookShark recommended making a cell out of food. Not only did my daughter love this activity, but she also loved showing it to friends who visited, including a pathologist who thought his university students might benefit from doing the activity.
Literature Based
Good books are the foundation of our home and homeschool. They lead us into our curiosities and our curiosities lead us books to find out more.
The books included in BookShark’s Level D are books we will keep forever. Many are Usborne Books and More (our favorite). The other books have the same high-quality. Filled with facts, pictures, and a variety of information, my daughter (and I) have learned so much this year!
Critical Thinking and Writing
Not only does BookShark’s science curriculum encourage kids to read, but the activity sheets they provide also encourage kids to write and think critically. Each lesson includes a few pages to read and questions to answer. While some of the questions are recall questions, many invite learners to dig deep and challenge their understanding. I am typically not a fan of worksheets, but I am a fan of questions that get my kid writing and thinking. BookShark’s activity sheets invite meaningful reflection.
FUN!
When taught well, science can be FUN! BookShark made sure to include all sorts of odd, funny, creepy things to learn about. We constantly find ourselves laughing, amazed, grossed out, and in joy!
Secular
While our spiritual beliefs absolutely coincide with our learnings, I want the resources we use to offer scientific facts. It’s important my children have facts. The world is filled with bias and opinion. Facts matter. I so appreciate BookShark’s secular approach.
My daughter plans to homeschool throughout middle and high school and we both agree BookShark is what she’ll use. A huge weight off my shoulders, I am seriously so grateful! Like a homeschooling partner, BookShark makes science approachable and engaging. We can’t recommend it enough!
