Welcome to Reading and Writing Workshop, a weekly class for students in high school to read, write, and connect. Each monthly unit study includes reading comprehension, writing, grammar, revision, and editing activities.

Please note- This class meets weekly for four weeks. Students will have the best experience if they attend all four classes. Classes are not recorded, but on request, I can send the class slides to students who are absent.

Reading and Writing Workshop

Materials

Students will need:

• Printed copies of any handouts
• Folder for classwork
• Paper, notebook, or computer to type on
• Something to write with
• Access to Zoom
• Access to Common Lit and Wayground for games and activities- students will be provided with links. We do not use these sites in every class.

Homework

It’s up to each family. I offer reading and writing activities that students can do at home so they can practice what we’re learning. While I do not offer grades, students are welcome to email me their assignments for feedback.

Teaching Style

I believe in student-centered learning and the importance of structure in a classroom. I set classroom agreements to help create a safe, fun, inspiring space for all students to feel supported, want to participate, and be able to learn. I encourage participation, but do not force it. I use materials to help students connect and find interest.

Interaction

I encourage participation throughout the class through both the chat and verbal. I make sure to answer all questions and call on all students who wish to participate. Students will interact with each other through discussion and when sharing their writing.

Class Accommodations 

• Students are welcome to have a scribe or use speech-to-text
• All class materials, including texts, will be read aloud while students follow along.
• All instructions are written and read aloud.
• Cameras can be on or off.
• Students can participate by unmuting or typing in the chat.
• Sharing is encouraged but never required.

Assessment

Students are assessed informally when they participate and share their ideas and writing. They can email me written assignments for feedback. At any time, parents are welcome to message me with questions or concerns.
