The Courage Is … Unit Study examines Pam Muñoz Ryan’s and her novels Solimar, The Sword of the Monarchs, and The Dreamer.

The unit study asks learners to explore the idea of courage- the courage it takes to speak up, to be who they want to be, to follow their dreams, and to be themselves.

Learners will look at the idea of courage in Pam Muñoz Ryan’s novels, and they’ll learn about Pablo Neruda through his story and poetry. Characters in the novels face challenges that ask them to be courageous. Learners will see that having courage is not always easy but can ultimately pay off.

The creative writing projects ask learners to be courageous. The projects invite them to try their hand at different types of writing, to examine our environment, dreams, the things and people who inspire them, and to use their imagination.
