Creativity is a literary magazine for homeschoolers created by homeschoolers! Students in Kindergarten-12th grade are invited to submit original pieces of writing, art, and photography.

CALL for SUBMISSIONS!!
HEAD HERE TO SUBMIT YOUR STUDENT’S CREATIVITY.
We accept art, photography, poetry, short stories, comics, essays, and short prose by homeschoolers in grades K-12. Our first magazine is set for publication in June 2026!
What is a Literary Magazine?
A literary magazine is a compilation of writing, art, and photography. Being published in the magazine can encourage students to create, revise, and edit. Publication also helps them share their writing with their peers, family, friends, and homeschoolers around the world. Filled with Creativity (hence the name), I’m excited to offer a place for homeschool students to publish their creations!
Creativity- A Homeschool Literary Magazine
Who can submit? Homeschoolers in grades K-12 from anywhere in the world.
What can be submitted? Original art (digital or photographed), photography, and writing.
- Art and photography need to be uploaded as a JPG or PNG. Pieces can be in color or black and white.
- Writing needs to be typed and uploaded as a PDF. Pieces can be up to two typed pages, size 12, Times New Roman.
How many pieces can my students submit? Students can submit up to three pieces of art, photography, and/or writing. They are welcome to submit a piece of each or three of the same genre.
Where will students submit? Students will upload their creations to a Google Form.
What submissions will be accepted? All submissions will be accepted as long as they do not have racist or discriminatory images, ideas, or themes.
AI submissions will not be accepted.
Students should keep in mind that this magazine is for students of all ages when submitting work.
If the advisor (Kelly Sage) has any concerns about the submission, the family will be notified, and the student will have an opportunity to revise.
What information will students need to share to submit? Students will need to share their first name, parents’ email address, the country they live in, and their submission. They will also need to agree to have their work published and agree that it was made by them.
Will student submissions be edited? Submissions will only be edited for spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
How will the magazine be published? The magazine will be published digitally. A PDF will be emailed to everyone who submits to the magazine. Families are welcome to print the magazine. A digital, view-only version will be available through this website for everyone to read.
How much does it cost to submit to the magazine and receive a digital copy? Creativity is free!
My kids aren’t sure what to write about. You’ve come to the right place! Here are some of my favorite ways to encourage writers.
- Create a Vision Board- Free LIVE class Thursday, January 15th at noon.
- Make and Play with Story Cubes
- Write a memoir in just six words.
- Create a character and use it in your next story.
- Make a Writing Territories List
- Play with poetry
- More Activities and Games to get kids writing
How can I help my kids get a piece ready for the magazine?
STEP 1- CHOOSE A PIECE OF WRITING
If your student doesn’t have a piece of writing they want to submit, use the tools in my Little Free Resource Library to help them get started.
- Creative Writing Fast Write Video and Prompts
- Amazing Acrostics
- Poetic Autobiography
- Roll a Story
- Six-word Memoir
- Seasonal Prompts
STEP 2- REVISE
Have writers look again at their piece of writing to bring clarity, more details, vivid words, and their voice to the piece. This post on helping students revise has a bunch of ideas.
STEP 3- EDIT
Here’s where we clean up spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I suggest creating an editing checklist. I have several for different ages in my member library, but a basic one can be found here.
STEP 4- Submit!!
If your writer needs help, my Outschool classes and Creative Writing Studio classes are a great place for them to get ideas. I also offer 1-1 sessions.
If your student is submitting art or photography, I’d have them go through a similar process. Remind them that many pieces of art and photography also have titles.
I’m not sure my student’s writing or art is good enough.
Something I love most about writing is that it’s subjective. We love the books and art that others think are horrible. We’re looking for writing, art, and photography that your homeschooler created. We’re looking for THEIR voice, style, and creativity. We’re excited to share their creations. They will be loved!

A Co-Creation-
Just like with the previous magazines I helped create*, Creative ELA’s Homeschool Literary Magazine is created by students. They’ve chosen the name, Creativity, and are now designing the cover. Staff members are the designers and editors. They even write the emails and create the social media posts inviting your family to submit. As the advisor, I’m here to help and send the emails!
Would your homeschooler like to be part of the staff where they’ll learn design, editing, and be part of a team? New positions will open up in November 2026 for the 2027 publication. Staff positions are closed for the 2026 publication.
Families need to be Creative ELA Members to help create this Homeschool Literary Magazine. Join us to participate. Anyone is welcome to submit to the magazine.
If your student wants to know what a literary magazine is and what it’s like to be on the staff, this video is an introduction.
*I was the teacher/advisor for Blackburg High School’s (3 years) and Pinnacle School’s K-12 (6 years) Literary Magazines.
