When our homes feel chaotic so do we! Here are steps to create a family rhythm so you can spend time living the life you want day after day.

“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives,”

I’m often struck by Dillard’s words; the simple reminder every minute and hour eventually adds up to a life. Looking back at yesterday, last year, or even just an hour ago, the ordinary moments build my day. Breakfast, laundry, teaching, driving the kids to their activities, one moment after another, often on repeat.

Each day ordinary moments dance with how I choose to live them.

I choose if I give my children plenty of time to finish an activity or get ready to leave the house, and I choose if I pack too much into our day and everyone feels rushed and cranky.

I choose to get up early so I have the quiet time I need to work and start my day peacefully, or hit snooze until the kids are up, lose my time to work, and my quiet.

I choose to drink enough water, go to bed early, shut off my phone, and I choose to stay up late scrolling through Instagram because I’m wired on too much coffee or haven’t moved my body enough.

I choose so many parts of my day, and so do you.

Of course, not everything is a choice, and things as small as spilled juice or as big as a tragedy also make up the dance of our days, but most of our lives are made up of the mundane, ordinary moments and how we choose to experience them.

It is so easy to forget we choose.

Our choices create how our moments and, therefore, the lives we live.

When we go on autopilot, we can get into habits we don’t even realize we have.

One of the autopilot habits I fall into is allowing myself to believe I have more time than I actually do. Too often, I look at the clock and think, this will just take one more minute, or it only takes ten minutes to get to X. I neglect to consider the time it takes to finish up (it’s never one minute) and the time it takes to find my keys, take the dogs out, and get my child out the door.

When I am not present with time, I choose to be late, rushed, and overwhelmed.

That being said, sometimes, being on autopilot is necessary. It’s unrealistic to consider each choice I make with great presence.

This is why I need a rhythm to support the times I lean into autopilot.

Rest assured, finding or reworking a family rhythm is not about making big changes or making any of us feel more overwhelmed.

It’s a guide.

Taking the time to create a family rhythm helps us stop and look at the everyday moments that are going well and slowly adjust the parts of our day that feel stuck or hard.

A family rhythm is not about having it all together (we never will), about being perfect (no one is), or about creating routines that will last the rest of our lives.

It’s about looking at now, right now.

Right now is where I am, you are, and it’s the best place to start.

  3. Very inspired and grateful Kelly for all your writing. Struggling with where to go with homeschooling my son, who doesn’t want to do too much at the moment. Inspiration is needed. Thanks

    • So hard! I’ve been there. Breaks can be good. So can games and reading together. Not sure your situation, but sometimes they need a reset. Happy to help out if you’d like to dig in deeper.
