My daughter carries a sketchbook around with her everywhere she goes. I often find her up late at night drawing. She says it quiets her night anxiety and she had an idea she wanted to try. My son, like his father, is always building something. Legos cities, tree forts, a scooter or bike trailer, giant box sculptures; he likes to build BIG things. My husband and I are often creating things too. Art and its many forms connect our family. Watercolors, woodworking, our hands and fingers covered in clay; we love it all. Not only is it fun to create, art is vital. It’s important for child development and for many of us, my family included, grounds us when we’re stressed or are needing to unwind.
Art lovers come in many forms. Maybe it’s appreciation. Maybe fiber, pencil, or graphic design. It doesn’t matter the form. Grab a book for young artists. Not only is it fun to flip through project ideas, learn about artists and their work, and see how a line can become a forest, art books offer us the chance to play!
