Getting teenagers to read, let alone read for pleasure, can be challenging. One of my favorite and sometimes MOST difficult tasks as an English teacher is helping my students find a book they want to read. While some kids love to read, many won’t pick up a book unless they have to. If your teen is one of these kids, you’re not alone. My teen is the same way. There are so many things that are louder, feel more pressing, and take less time vying for their attention. I’m grateful to the English teachers who require my school kid to read a book of their choosing. It’s one of the few things I require my homeschooler to do as well. Got a teenager who isn’t reading? Don’t despair! I’ve got 50 great reads your teen might just love.

A quick note about getting our kids to love reading. I’ve seen the books below help teenagers become readers. Does that mean they will turn into kids who always have a book in their hands or read for pleasure for the rest of their lives. As much as I’d love to say yes, no, no, it doesn’t. What it means is in the moment, they enjoyed reading. It means maybe the next time they need to read or have nothing to do; they’ll pick up a book without hesitation. It means they have had the experience a good book can offer.

To help me generate this list, I surveyed my students (past and present) and my teen. Here is a list of their favorite reads.

  1. This is wonderful! I have one teen and he HATES to read. I do require him to read each day and we’re always trying out new books. I am pinning this for even more suggestions.
